This 3 week tour of Sumatra takes you on an intensive journey of discovery through one of Indonesia’s most unspoiled regions. You will experience the cultural highlights of West Sumatra, spectacular landscapes in the Harau Valley, the gigantic Lake Toba, active volcanoes, the rainforest of Bukit Lawang with orangutans, and finally the beautiful island of Pulau Weh in the north.
The trip combines nature, culture, adventure, and relaxation in an ideal way: hikes through rice terraces, encounters with local village communities, volcano climbs, jungle trekking, and relaxing days by the sea. You will stay in carefully selected, typical local accommodations – from eco-lodges to beach apartments.
This round trip is perfect for travelers who want to experience Sumatra intensively and authentically without sacrificing comfort.
This 3 week Sumatra round trip is a suggestion. We are happy to adapt it to your individual wishes and ideas. It can also be done in reverse.
Note: The prices quoted are starting prices based on 2 travelers. There is a single room supplement. They include all services listed. Higher prices apply primarily during the high season from May to July and on Indonesian holidays such as Ramadan or Idul Fitri. All prices are in euros and per person.
For families: We do not offer special children’s prices on our tours, but we do offer families a discounted total price. Children under 2 years of age who sleep in their parents’ bed travel free of charge.

Arrival in Padang
Upon arrival at Padang Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and get your first impressions of West Sumatra.

Transport to Bukittinggi
Today you will travel to the highlands of Bukittinggi, the cultural center of the Minangkabau. The scenic route takes you through green valleys, rice fields, and small villages.

Harau Valley – Pure nature
A trip to the impressive Harau Valley is on the agenda. High rock faces, waterfalls, and lush vegetation characterize this unique natural area.

Today is yours to spend at your leisure. Explore the Harau Valley on walks or short hikes, or simply enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Transport to Padang Sidempuan
You continue your journey north. The long but varied drive (8 hours) takes you through lesser-traveled regions of Sumatra and offers authentic insights into rural life.

Transport to Lake Toba
Today you will reach Lake Toba (8 hurs drive), the largest crater lake in the world. After arrival, there will be time to enjoy the special atmosphere of the lake.

Lake Toba – Freetime
A relaxing day at Lake Toba. Use the time to swim, go for a walk, or simply relax.

Lake Toba – Sightseeing
Today, you will discover the cultural highlights around Lake Toba and learn about the traditions of the Batak people.

Transport to Berastagi
You continue on to the highlands of Berastagi, known for its pleasant climate and surrounding volcanoes.

Climbing Sibayak volcano
Early in the morning, you will hike up Mount Sibayak and enjoy impressive views. Afterwards, your driver will take you on a sightseeing tour in and around Berastagi, including visits to the fruit market, Gundaling Hill, and Lumbini Temple.

Transport to Bukit Lawang
Today you will travel to Bukit Lawang on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park.

Start of the 2 day jungle trek
Today you will start your two-day jungle trek in the rainforest of Bukit Lawang. Your main luggage will be stored safely. With a little luck, you will encounter orangutans and other wild animals.
Accommodation: Simple jungle camp
Alternatively, you can also go on a 1-day trek and stay overnight in Bukit Lawang. Please let us know if you would like to do this when you make your request.

Return from the jungle
Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and enjoy breakfast by the river. Then visit a nearby waterfall before returning to Bukit Lawang by tubing.

Village Tour in Bukit Lawang
On a guided village tour, you will learn about local life and gain insights into the everyday lives of the local people.

Transport to Medan
Today you will return to Medan, near Kuala Namu Airport. You can spend the morning in Bukit Lawang.

Flight to Banda Aceh & onward to Pulau Weh
Please book your flight to Banda Aceh yourself.
Upon arrival, you will be personally picked up by a private driver for your Sumatra tour. He will take you to the port and purchase your ferry tickets (included). Upon arrival on Pulau Weh, another driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it and will take you to your accommodation.

Transfer to Banda Aceh + Flight
Your 3 week Sumatra tour is coming to an end. Today, your private driver will take you to Banda Aceh Airport, from where you will continue your journey or return home.
It is best to book a flight after 12 noon so that you can still catch the ferry. Banda Aceh is an international airport with connections to Kuala Lumpur (direct), Bangkok, or Singapore.
