Up to 30 days visa free entry to Sumatra
Citizens of many countries may enter Sumatra without a visa. This “Visa Free Entry” regulation applies if you do not wish to stay longer than 30 days on Sumatra or one of the other islands.
A valid identity document is the passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months after entering Sumatra. It is important that at least two free pages are still available in the passport and that you have a valid return flight ticket. A temporary passport will not be accepted.
Requirements:
- passport valid for at least 6 months
- Two free pages in passport
- Valid return ticket/onward ticket
You do not yet have a return flight ticket because you want to travel flexibly? Try Onward-Tickets.
Travel longer than 30 days on Sumatra
Visa on arrival for up to 60 days
For a longer holiday on Sumatra you can buy a “Visa on Arrival” at the airport upon arrival. This is valid for a stay of 30 days and can be extended by another 30 days at any Imigrasi in Sumatra or on another island in Indonesia. At passport control there is a separate row for Visa on Arival in Sumatra. The visa costs $35, payable in cash only. You can also pay in other currencies, but the exchange rates are bad.
The extension costs another $30 and can be applied for at the earliest 7 days before the visa expires. Don’t wait too long for the extension of the Visa on Arrival in Sumatra. We heard of rejected travellers whose visas were only valid for 1 day. The rules are not always the same in all these immigration offices. It depends partly on the day, the place and the clerk. It is advisable to ask the respective Imigrasi in advance how long it will take and waht is exactly needed.
It is best to show up at the Imigrasi 5 to 7 days before your visa expires. The immigration authorities in Sumatra are called “Kantor Imigrasi”. There are different categories of Imigrasi (Kelas I, II and III). It is not entirely clear whether everyone can extend the Visa on Arrival for Sumatra. It is best to ask in advance.
The usual renewal process foresees three visits to the Imigrasi. At the first visit you hand in the forms and photocopies. You will then receive a payment form which you must present to a bank to pay the renewal fee for your Visa on Arrival ($30). A few days later you will have to go to Imigrasi to take a fingerprint and take photos. A few days later you can then pick up your passport with your extension stamp. The visa extension stamp shows the exact date on which your extension expires. The extension will always be issued on the date your current visa expires, not the day you apply for the extension. In this way you will always receive the full 60 days, even if you receive your extension a few days in advance. After 60 days you have to leave the country.
Requirements:
- 35$ in cash
- passport valid for at least 6 months
- Two free pages in passport
- Valid return ticket/onward ticket
Visit visa for up to 180 days stay
For a stay of up to 180 days on Sumatra a so-called visit visa can be obtained. Applying for this visa for Sumatra can take some time. Therefore, it is advisable to apply for the Visit visa a few weeks in advance at an embassy or the nearest consulate.
With this visa you can initially stay 60 days on Sumatra and easily extend the visa monthly up to 6 months. This is also an alternative to the Visa on Arrival for Sumatra if you want to avoid going to the Imigrasi.
This Sumatra visa can be applied for at any Indonesian embassy outside Indonesia. The application should be made at least 4 weeks in advance. For this visa there should be four free pages in the passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months after entry. Furthermore 2 color biometric passport photos and a fully completed visa application is needed. This can usually be found on the website of the respective embassy. In general this visa type also asks about your financial circumstances. You can prove this with a bank statement.
List of embassys and consulates per country
For the extension you usually have to have a sponsor. So a local who is liable for you. He has to fill in a form which will be sent to the Imigrasi together with a copy of his identity card. The procedure is similar to the extension of the Visa on Arrival. You have to go to the Imigrasi three times. The earlier you get to the Imgrasi, the better.
Requirements:
- passport valid for at least 6 months
- Four free pages in passport
- Valid return ticket/oward ticket
- Filled visa application form
- 2 coloured biometric passport photos 3.5 x 4.5 cm

Social visas for cultural or social purposes
The Social Visa is suitable for family visits, studies or internships. For your stay in Sumatra, which is to serve a study or an internship or a family visit, you additionally need various documents. The visa itself allows a stay of 60 days and can be extended up to four times by 30 days at any Imigrasi.
For a semester abroad, you need a certificate of enrolment from the university or college and a declaration of guarantee from your parents. For an internship, the certificate of the educational institution or the internship contract must be submitted.
A sponsor is required for the Social Visa. This can be an Indonesian from the university, the company or another institution. For a visa for Sumatra, the sponsor must be a living in Sumatra. It is better if the sponsor comes from the same place as the applicant intends to stay and goes to the Imigrasi personally during the extension.
