Sustainable travel

Our Vision

Sustainable travel with Discover Sumatra

For us, sustainability is not a trend, but a fundamental attitude. As a small, locally rooted agency, we are actively committed to protecting nature and supporting local communities in Sumatra. Our trips are designed to be as ethical, responsible and environmentally friendly as possible – and we are constantly working to improve.

Our dedicated guides are from the region, know the jungle like the back of their hand and are actively committed to its preservation. They do not touch, feed or call out to wild animals, but observe them with respect and from a distance. During the trekking tours, they regularly collect rubbish and pass on their knowledge of flora, fauna and sustainability to our guests.

All tour guides receive specific training on topics such as waste prevention, animal welfare and environmentally friendly behaviour. In all activities – from jungle trekking to village visits – we take care not to disturb nature and wildlife and to treat the cultural space with respect. On our jungle treks, we use reusable metal lunch boxes for lunch in the jungle, and in the camp we use Waterdrop water filters.

We also invite you, as travellers, to be mindful of the environment and resources of Sumatra and to appreciate the diversity of local cultures. In our travel documents and personal consultations, we are happy to provide you with practical tips on responsible behaviour, environmental protection and cultural customs.

In this way, we can work together to ensure that future generations can also experience the unique beauty of Sumatra.

Tips for eco friendly travel in Sumatra

Travelling causes a lot of waste and trash starting from plastic water bottles, to single-use items and over-tourism. Acting more eco-friendly reduces the impacts of tourism and helps the planet, wildlife and ecosystems. Read our blog post

As a responsible tour operator, we are committed to protecting Gunung Leuser National Park and its unique wildlife. The protection of wild orangutans is especially close to our hearts. That’s why we follow strict ethical guidelines on all our trekking tours – for the well-being of the animals, the preservation of nature, and the benefit of future generations.
