If you’re planning a jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, it’s important to know that the prices are officially set by the local Guide Association (ITGA-HPI).
These fixed jungle trek prices apply to all licensed guides and registered tour operators in Bukit Lawang, ensuring fair pay, safety, and quality standards for every trek through the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park.
Whether you book your Sumatra jungle trek directly in Bukit Lawang or through a trusted agency like Discover Sumatra, the official rates remain the same.
This system helps protect both the local community and the ecosystem that makes Bukit Lawang such a special place to visit.
All prices are determined by the Indonesian Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI) in cooperation with local stakeholders to ensure transparency and fairness.
Transport to and from Medan and accommodation before and/or after the trek are not included in the official trek price set by HPI! Anyone offering this for free is undercutting the official prices and underpaying their guides. More info
Sundays: +5 euros/person

"Guests want to make sure that their money actually goes to the locals. I can assure you: All income from our jungle treks go directly to our local team in Bukit Lawang. The guides, cooks and porters are paid for their work directly on site. As the managing director of Discover Sumatra, I do not earn anything from the trekking fees. For me, the priority is that the people who work in and around the rainforest every day can make a living from their work and are paid fairly. That is my understanding of sustainable and responsible tourism."
Choosing the official price for your Bukit Lawang jungle trekking tour means you are directly supporting ethical and sustainable tourism in Sumatra.
Unfortunately, some operators advertise cheaper jungle treks – sometimes including accommodation or transport from Medan – but these are illegal under the guide association’s rules. Cheaper offers usually mean that guides, assistants, cooks, and porters receive unfairly low wages, and quality or safety standards are often compromised.
By paying the official price, you help to:
At Discover Sumatra, we are proud to follow the official ITGA-HPI pricing system. We pass on all the money for trekking to the guides, assistants and other people involved, enabling us to pay them one of the highest salaries in Bukit Lawang.
Your choice to book responsibly ensures that tourism in Bukit Lawang stays fair, respectful, and sustainable — for the people, the wildlife, and the rainforest itself. 🌱
We started as a tour operator not only because we love the island and the nature, but also to connect and help the locals. We work with a selected bunch of locals for trekking, transport an guiding and also help local NGOs. More about us
