Wildlife in the jungle of Bukit Lawang: a paradise for nature lovers

Bukit Lawang, located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, is a world-renowned jungle trekking destination and offers nature lovers the opportunity to experience one of Indonesia’s most biodiverse animal kingdoms up close. The area is not only known for its lush flora and tropical rainforests, but above all for the large number of animal species that live here. A jungle trek in Bukit Lawang gives visitors the chance to observe some of the most fascinating animals of the Indonesian jungle – both rare and more common inhabitants. Here’s an overview of the impressive wildlife you could expect to see on a tour.

1. Orangutans

Orangutans are probably the biggest attraction in Bukit Lawang. The Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the last refuges of this endangered primate species. On a jungle trek, there is a good chance of encountering an orangutan in the wild – a unique experience that you will not soon forget. The shy animals live in the treetops and feed mainly on fruit. Our guides make sure to keep a respectful distance to ensure the protection of the animals. No calling, feeding or touching the animals.

2. Thomas Leaf Monkeys

Another very distinctive primate species that can be found in Bukit Lawang are the Thomas Leaf Monkey. These monkeys are easily recognised by their grey-white fur colouring and their striking mop of hair, which is why they are also known as Funky Monkeys. They often travel in groups and have a playful and curious nature. Hikers can often observe the animals jumping from tree to tree. The Silver Leaf Monkeys are also similar, but are rarely seen. They have dark grey fur and the babies are orange.

3. Macaques

Long-tailed macaques and pig-tailed macaques are also frequently encountered. While long-tailed macaques are quite sociable and often seen in large groups, pig-tailed macaques are slightly larger with huge teeth. Both species can be very curious, so caution is advised when approaching the trekking camp.

The long-tailed macaques also often hang out in the village centre of Bukit Lawang and hang out on the balconies of the guesthouses. They can appear somewhat aggressive. Keep calm and call for help if necessary. The locals know how to deal with these curious animals.

4. Gibbons

With a bit of luck and a little patience, you may also hear or see gibbons. This primate species is famous for its far-reaching, melodic calls that echo through the jungle. They move acrobatically through the trees, usually in small family groups. Their lively movements are a marvellous spectacle for any visitor.

5. Hornbills

The birdlife of the jungle is just as fascinating. The hornbills with their large, curved beaks are particularly striking. There are several species of these majestic birds and they can usually be recognised by their distinctive flight or calls. Hornbills play an important role in the ecosystem as they contribute to the dispersal of seeds.

6. Butterflies and Insects

During the trek, you will notice the variety of butterflies and insects in the jungles of Bukit Lawang. From tiny, colourful butterflies to impressively large butterflies such as the giant atlas butterfly, there is an enormous range of insect species that contribute to the biodiversity of the region.

7. Lizards and Reptiles

The jungle is also home to lizards, geckos and the occasional snake, which can be found either in the undergrowth, in trees or near water. Many of these reptiles are perfectly adapted to their habitat and have excellent camouflage. Don’t worry: the guides know how to handle the animals and ensure the safety of the group.

8. Malayan Sun Bear

If you’re lucky, you might spot tracks of the shy Malayan bear, also known as the sun bear. These bears are mainly active at night and live very secluded lives. Their presence can be recognised by scratch marks on trees or their characteristic nests.

9. Birds

In addition to the hornbills, the jungle is home to a rich bird life. Birds of paradise, kingfishers, orioles and many other colourful bird species offer a fascinating experience for birdwatchers. They contribute to the lively atmosphere of the rainforest with their songs and flying feats.

10. Reptiles and Amphibians

The rainforest is also home to various frogs, salamanders and small lizard species. Especially during the rainy season, when the jungle comes to life, these animals can be observed or heard.

11. Tiger and Rhinos

Gunung Leuser National Park is not only home to the more well-known primates and bird species, but is also home to some of the rarest and most impressive large animals in the world – Sumatran tigers and Sumatran rhinos. These animals are considered highly endangered and live very deep in the dense jungle. Their tracks can sometimes be spotted by experienced rangers, but the likelihood of encountering one of these animals during a jungle trek is extremely low. The shy animals avoid contact with humans and roam remote, inaccessible regions of the national park. This distance protects them from human influence and helps to preserve their habitat. Nevertheless, it remains impressive to be travelling in an area that offers protection to these majestic animals.

Respectful treatment of animals

During the jungle trek, it is important to treat the animals with respect. The guides make sure to keep their distance so as not to disturb or endanger the animals. This ensures a responsible nature experience for everyone involved.

A tour through the jungle of Bukit Lawang offers an unrivalled natural spectacle. Whether you are watching orangutans, listening to the call of gibbons or marvelling at the variety of butterflies – this adventure in Sumatra will stay with you forever.
