Lizardbelly

I found Discover Sumatra by chance while surfing the web about seeing orangutans in Sumatra. For my family – wife and two teen daughters – this was our first trip to Asia, our first trip so far south (from Tucson, AZ, USA) and our first trip to a jungle. I usually take care of all trip details but figuring out how to find and engage tiny operators in Sumatra was tough. I reached out to Discover Sumutra and they took care of the rest. There was a great driver waiting for us when we landed in Medan, people were waiting to help us move our stuff (girls could/would not limit themselves to one backpack) in Bukit Lawang to a wonderful guesthouse on the river. At 6:30 the next morning, an army of monkeys woke us as they raced and chased across our tin roof and generally hung around in the surrounding trees, railings and walkways. After a delicious breakfast, we headed off on our trek to see orangutans with a Discover Sumatra guide who was amazingly knowledgeable about the orangutans, their history and the village’s struggle to reduce human-orangutan interactions. We were fortunate and saw two mother orangutans with young babies. We saw other wildlife as well before having a riverside lunch and then taking a river raft ride back to our village. At the end of our stay, we again had a wonderful guide who drove us to Lake Toba. Our trip to Bukit Lawang was solely organized by Discover Sumatra and their team’s work let us focus on enjoying the trip and less on managing the details. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Good communications, great team, and a sensitivity to keeping orangutans wild.
